We were able to get a few more cases of this benchmark bottle of Beaujolais. Though the scores aren't out yet, 2019 will be an incredible vintage for Lapierre, and we cannot recommend this Cuvee enough.
The 2019 vintage in Beaujolais is fantastic, and John Gilman calls it one of the best of all time. Lapierre's Cuvee Marcel is consistently one of the highlights in Beaujolais in any vintage, and the 2019 is one of the top efforts of all time. 2019 is a tiny crop, and the yields were cut by 50% compared to 2018 due to poor weather conditions, but what was left was high quality and concentrated. Cuvee Marcel comes from Domaine's oldest heritage vine made in homage to Marcel Lapierre. My first experience with this wine was the 1999 vintage, tasted blind at a red Burgundy event, and it was as good or better than some of the premier crus we tasted. Fast forward 20 years, Lapierre's vines are now older, the bio-dynamic work in the vineyard is flourishing, and Mathieu's winemaking is better than ever. This is a spectacular vintage for the Cuvee Marcel, ranking up among the top bottles the Domaine has ever produced, and if you follow Beaujolais or Lapierre, this is a must-have.
