This Domaine is a hidden gem that is just beginning to be discovered, although it as founded in 1893 by Pierre Glantenay. The Domaine is now in its 4th generation run by Guillaume and Sarah Glantenay. The Glantenays farm, 8 hectares via sustainable agriculture, with the utmost respect for the terror. They take meticulous care of their vineyards via pruning, de-budding, green harvesting, letting the grass, herbs, and flowers grow between the rows then plowing them over to create natural humus. When the harvest comes, they make a strict selection in the vineyard and again at the winery. They ferment in stainless steel vats with about 30% whole cluster fruit; after primary fermentation, they move the wines into oak barrels with a small percentage being new to age between 10 to 18 months depending on the appellation.
I tasted through a line up of their 2017's which were quite lovely, but the wine for me was the 2015 Volnay 1er Les Brouillard. It was the greatest example I have ever tasted from this vineyard even better than the Regis Rossignol version that we import. The Glantenay's Volnay 1er Brouillard is only a one-hectare plot with 55 to 80+-year-old vines. It's an outstanding 2015 with incredible depth, power, and elegance like the most exceptional red Burgundies can possess. Aromas of ripe red, and black fruits, tree bark, earth are the focus on the nose. On the palate, there is incredible depth, with blue and red fruits, grilled meats, savory herbs, forest floor. The finish is long and leaves lots of dry extract in the mouth with lingering fruit and mineral nuances. This is incredible juice that is approachable now but would be better in a couple of years and last a decade or two. Burghound has started visiting this property and gave this wine a nice note in 2016 and 2017 vintage! This is a great red Burgundy not to miss and rivals the best addresses of the village at less than ½ their prices!
