It's always nice to get a great Burgundy back vintage, especially at reasonable pricing, and these last bottles from Ecard are perfect examples of that. A beautiful Savigny les Beaune from a vineyard close to the famed Damodes, this is an excellent value for 2015 Red Burgundy from a producer worth checking out. We have the only bottles in the USA of this wine that will arrive in May.
A small operation located in Savigny less Beaune, Ecard is a brilliant little producer working less than five hectares and is the son Maurice Ecard who was one of the great winemakers of Savigny les Beaune. When Maurice retired in 2005, the family chose to dissolve the Domaine instead of splitting it up. However, Michel still had a passion for winemaking, having worked beside his father for most of his life, and was determined to create his own label. Michel agreed with his uncle, who also had vines in Savigny to rent his vines, and the rest was history. Michel expanded upon what he learned from his father, and in a short time, it was clear that he was on the right track with wines that showed a bit more refinement than his Fathers but still with a classic sense of place. Michel is a one-person show and does most of the work in the vineyard and the cellar by himself, never using herbicides and pesticides, plowing between vines, and limiting yields with a more hands-off style in the cellar. Les Peuillets may not be the first vineyard that comes to mind when thinking of Savigny. Still, it is in great company, located on the southern hill of the appellation along with vineyards like Dominode, and Narbantons, perched just below Marconnets. 2015 was a top vintage for red Burgundy, and as a result, this is one of the ultimate examples of this wine from Ecard and an excellent buy for a premier cru with age. The Ecard wines, because of the small production, are very rare, and at the moment, we have the only bottles of 2015 in the USA which are due to arrive in the second quarter of this year.
