It has been quite some time since we have offered anything from Mouzon Leroux, but that changes now. One of the greatest biodynamic Champagne producers, their 250-year family tradition is carried into the modern age by current generation winemaker Sebastien Mouzon.
The wines are expressive, transparent, and capture the very soul of the Verzy and Montagne de Reims terroir. Their Champagne L'Atavique is one of their staple cuvees and a bottle we have enjoyed countless times over the years. Made with 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay with a low dosage of 2.5 g/l, a large portion comes from reserve wines from two previous vintages. In this instance the vintage blend is 50% 2018, 25% 2017, and 25% 2016.
L'Atavique always shows fantastic complexity, focus, energy, and mineral/ terroir expression. It is a serious, textbook example of what grower Champagne is all about, from the organic farming practices to excellent ripe fruit while never losing sight of the vineyard expression. If you like great vineyard-driven bubbles, this is the bottle for you. This Cuvee has been hard to source at reasonable pricing, but we sourced a nice lot at this low pricing for our clients today.
