2016 Silvio Giamello Barbaresco Vicenziana
We just tasted this wine earlier this week giving us another glimpse in to how historic the 2016 vintage is going to be. A truly traditional producer, the Giamello family has been farming the land of Barbaresco since the early 1900s. Growing a spectrum of plants, they weren’t always focused on the tending of vines, but that changed in the 50s when farming became lacking in profit. The two Giamello brothers started a trucking company and during that time their mother began to replant their farmlands to vines. One of the brothers eventually returned when the economy improved and was able to focus on wine production full time. Now ran by his son and daughter in law Silvio Giamello and Marina Camia, who together practice all-natural vine growing and very traditional methods of vinification. These are some of the most old school, downright traditional wine-making in Barbaresco using vines that are almost 50 years old. Transparent red fruits open the door to a world of minerality, sous bois, and earth. Great acidity and gripping tannins; a bottle that will need some time in the cellar to fully express itself. A Super classic, terrior driven bottle fully enveloped in the majesty of the 2016s, which are selling very quickly. Huge scores have started to roll out on the vintage so striking early will be key before prices start to climb.
