2016 Nicolas Badel St. Joseph Les Mourrays

Here is a new producer for us, Nicolas Badel is a small production winemaker in St. Joseph, practicing biodynamics and organics. Badel exploits the more elegant side of St. Joseph, coupled with his old vine holdings, Nicolas Badel is an underground producer making some of the best biodynamic wines St. Joseph. These are deep and complex wines, and Les Mourrays comes from 49-year-old vines from a special parcel above the village of Limony planted on pebbly granite. 2/3rds of the grapes are destemmed before pressing with fermentation taking place with natural yeasts in cement tanks. The wine is aged in older Burgundy Barrels for ten months before bottling. This is an excellent value and the perfect choice for those who prefer the more elegant and refined style that few Rhone producers can capture like Nicolas can.

Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 93 points! "Deep lurid ruby. Ripe blackberry, cherry liqueur, candied violet, smoked meat and exotic spice aromas show excellent clarity and mineral lift. Fleshy, palate-coating black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors pick up salty olive and bacon qualities with air, along with a suggestion of cracked pepper. Finishes appealingly sweet and impressively long, with chewy tannins adding final grip. Made from vines planted in the early 1970s; raised in new and used barriques."
