2020 Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben-Thanisch) Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett
One of our favorite addresses in the Mosel, the wines from Thanisch are fantastic and reasonably priced creations from one of Germany's most prized winemaking areas. A few years ago, we were visited by winemaker Maximilian F.W. Ferger who ran us through the complete lineup of his wines, and from the flagship to the entry-level, there wasn't a bad bottle in the entire range.
The Berncasteler Bastube is an incredible Riesling value and is one of the six great vineyard sites in Bernkastel, getting its name after the recreational hot springs that once surrounded the area. This vineyards lies right next to the famed Doctor vineyard (which is the prized site of Thanisch) and features a fine slate that retains a lot of water which is excellent in warm vintages like 2020 though it wasn't as warm as some previous years. The wines from this site are racy with stable acidity and good aging potential, while at the same time have excellent fruit and are more forward and approachable thanks to the slightly warmer weather endowing a bit more richness but balanced nonetheless. While some areas of Germany like Rheingau and Pfalz got hit with heavy frosts over three days, the Mosel remained relatively unscathed, with many producers reporting a good yielding crop.
2020 is a beautiful complex and more classic Riesling than some of the previous years. The 2020 Bernkasteller Bastube is ready to drink now though it could spend a bit more time in the cellar if desired, but in this very fresh and youthful state is undeniably good. This is an excellent Riesling from one of the few regions in the world where an entry-level wine can be truly impressive and this is one of the best examples yet from Thanisch.

James Suckling 93 points! "So much apricot and honeysuckle here, and all you need to do is lean back and let it wash over you. But what makes this wine irresistible is all the charm and spring-meadow freshness at the very clean finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
