Costanti is one of the few truly classic producers left in Tuscany, and their wines have seen very little change over the years, staying firmly rooted in tradition. The Costanti family’s history in Montalcino dates back to the 1500s, and they were among the earliest families to help define Brunello and bring the region's wines into the modern world. Today, the estate farms 12 hectares of organically worked vineyards at roughly 1300 feet elevation, where galestro soils, high-altitude freshness, and careful farming all contribute to the complexity, balance, and aromatic detail that define the wines. Current winemaker Andrea Costanti has often emphasized the impact that vineyard elevation, soil composition, and organic farming have on the bouquet, and after tasting mature bottles, it is easy to see why. The 2016 vintage was a dream year for Brunello, offering the rare combination of concentration, freshness, depth, and long-term structure, with Costanti’s version among the estate’s most significant modern efforts. At that time, the coastal region of Maremma was a swamp and a risk for malaria (it was later drained and became the wine region it is today), so following the first World War, when Giovanni Maria Fuligni was left with the family property in Scansano, a town within Maremma, he instead looked to Montalcino, which was on higher ground and had a more continental climate. It was there he founded the Fuligni estate in 1923. With his passing in 1971, his daughter Maria Flora Fuligni took over the estate, expanding the winery to international acclaim. Today, the estate is owned by Roberto Fuligni, the nephew of Maria Flora and grandson of Giovanni. However, 2021 is a special vintage because it is the first vintage of Riserva Angelo they have ever made, and it is a complete knock-out. The Riserva blends Nebbiolo from the great sites of Ronchi, Ovello, and Montersino to give a full cross-section of Barbaresco terroir. Fermentation is in a vertical Stockinger oak vat with a submerged-cap maceration of roughly 50 to 60 days, followed by long aging in large casks and additional time in bottle, so the style is unapologetically traditional, structured, and built to age. We have a limited amount available at this low pricing, and it's not one to miss!

Giuseppe Quintarelli Bianco Secco is a tremendously delicious, mineral-driven white every year, and the 2024 is another reminder of why this has become one of our favorite Italian whites. It has been a revelation to us in the past: refreshing, complex, and far more serious than expected from a wine that can be enjoyed so easily. Quintarelli is the icon of the Veneto, best known for monumental Amarone, Recioto, and Valpolicella, but while those wines call for a serious meal, Bianco Secco works at almost any moment of any day. The blend is led by Garganega (one of the standards of Veneto), with Trebbiano Toscano, Sauvignon Bianco, Chardonnay, and the rare local Saorin (Friuliano), sourced from limestone and basalt soils that give the wine floral lift, orchard fruit, citrus, gentle herbs, and a stony volcanic edge. This is another case of a winemaker famous for powerful reds, yet we often find ourselves reaching more for the sneaky-good white. Distinctive, food-friendly, and beautifully refreshing, this is a great buy from easily one of the greatest winemakers in northeast Italy!

Arianna Occhipinti is one of Sicily’s stars, and we have the new release of 2023 Il Frappato, a wine that has become an annual favorite among our clientele. Her wines rival the best of Sicily’s natural-wine movement, including producers such as Frank Cornelissen, yet remain unmistakably her own. Occhipinti’s approach is deliberately hands-off, guiding the wine rather than forcing it into a predetermined style, and Il Frappato remains the clearest expression of her philosophy—what Arianna describes as the elegance of rusticity and the ideal balance between refinement and peasantry. Produced entirely from organically farmed Frappato di Vittoria vines more than 40 years old, planted at roughly 1,000 feet elevation in Vittoria’s distinctive red sand, chalk, and limestone soils, the wine is fermented naturally in concrete before an extended élevage in concrete and bottle. The 2023 is powerful yet delicate, offering wild cherry, strawberry, violets, rose petals, white pepper, and Mediterranean herbs, with fine tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, savory, mineral finish. Light on its feet without ever feeling simple, this is another remarkable release from one of Italy’s most talented winemakers and can be enjoyed immediately, particularly with a slight chill, while possessing the structure to develop beautifully in the cellar.

James Suckling 96 pts! "A super-focused, polished, light and fresh wine with gentle aromas of wax, black pepper and wild strawberries. It’s a stop-and-stare phenomenon: I sat tasting it for half an hour and between all the adjectives, what really mattered was that I was almost ready to down tools and start drinking my way through the bottle at 2pm on a Monday. Yes, there is blood orange and cranberry, bitter cherries, the smell of rose petals after rain and some elusive spice, but what is more important is that I suddenly wanted to own cases of this wine. It’s an ambassador for Sicily, as vivid, arresting and confusing as the whole ancient island, and a reminder to resist the cliches. This is vigour, not lassitude; energy, not managed decay. It’s unmissable; a wine that sparks the kind of joy wine lovers crave. It comes in at a svelte 12.5 percent octane in 2023 and offers up a bright and complex bouquet of desiccated dark berries, a lovely array of spice tones, cola, a fine base of soil, woodsmoke, anise and a lovely rangy of sweet botanicals in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, complex and impeccably balanced, with a lovely core of black fruit, fine soil signature and grip, modest tannins and a long, precise and classy finish. I really love the wines from Arianna Occhipinti and wish that I had more opportunity to taste them with regularity. This lovely wine was actually tasted in Chablis in January with Vincent Dauvissat and a group of visitors to his domaine at the end of our Chablis tasting. Fine, fine juice.
