One of the best examples of the Fonte alla Selva Gran Selezione ever, we have a bit more of this one available, which is due to arrive later this month. Produced by Banfi, this was recently released and is undoubtedly a top buy for Tuscany following the Decanter review. The Fonte alla Selva Gran Selezione is sourced from a 40-hectare vineyard in the Castellina area of Chianti and has been part of Banfi's Tuscan portfolio since 1984. 100% Sangiovese, Banfi applies a traditional maceration of 8 to 10 days aging for a minimum of 30 months in oak barrels and further bottle aging. The 2020 vintage was warm and consistent, enhancing the intensity and structure of the wine. 2020 shows a fantastic core of fruit with excellent spice, balance of richness, and acidity. Banfi's winemaking approach combines modern techniques with traditional methods to create a tremendous Chianti Classico that is one of the best buys of the vintage in Tuscany.
Decanter 96 points! (Blind tasting pannel) "Founded in 1978 by Italian-American brothers John and Henry Mariani, Banfi is now one of Tuscany’s largest producers. With more than 40ha planted in Castellina, the best grapes are selected for this Gran Selezione, a 100% Sangiovese fermented in stainless steel then aged in French oak barrels and bottle for 30 months. Michelle Cherutti-Kowal MW: Fragrant – tea leaves, red cherries and a hint of leather. Tart red fruit on the palate, a hint of earthiness adds interest. Well structured and balanced. Sara Bachiorri: Dark cherry, chocolate, parsley and Mediterranean herbs. Polished and showy. High acidity and alcohol. Rich and full-bodied. Jason Millar: Deep, ripe fruit. Dense tannin. Integrated and complex, with fine cherry fruit. Serious, and seriously long: world class. Tea leaf and damson on the long finish. Needs time."
