Here is one of the most ambitious and iconic wines of Sicily at a great rate. Winemaker Salvatore Geraci's goal since taking over his family's estate was being able to pour his wines side by side with glasses of La Tache (as we mentioned in Robert Camuto's excellent travel book A Sicilian Wine Odyssey). In 1990 Geraci took over the family property with extremely steep Nerello Mascalese vines perched above the Straight of Messina on the very north-eastern tip of the island. His wines are powerful yet so beautifully elegant and very much inspired by great Red Burgundy. We've brought the wines in for several years now, and the quality is exceptional. Wines that really compete with the best elegant and aromatic examples of Burgundy and Piedmont. Palari Faro is a rarity in the US, typically not making it outside of Europenoften except for a few lesser back vintages that go for twice the price, and 2014 arguably the best vintage ever for Palari Faro. These back-vintage bottles are coming straight from their cellars and are the only bottles available outside of Europe. An Italian rarity worth checking out making wines that parallel top Sicilian producers like Frank Cornelissen. These bottles should be drinking exceptionally well now and, with their classic structure, should effortlessly age for another decade.
Wine Enthusiast (Kerin O'Keffe) 98 points! "Boasting structure, elegance and complexity, this compelling wine opens with aromas of wild berry, Mediterranean scrub, new leather and a whiff of tilled earth. Smooth and enveloping, the radiant palate shows a great depth of flavors including juicy red cherry, crushed strawberry and licorice offset by an energizing mineral tension. It's impeccably balanced, with taut, refined tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2021–2034."
