2017 Charles Joguet Chinon Clos de la Dioterie Magnum

$129.99
2017 Charles Joguet Chinon Clos de la Dioterie Magnum
We haven't offered many wines from Joguet before except their Rose, which is a fun bottle, but after seeing the score on this wine from Vinous, it wasn't one to pass up. One of the top estates of Chinon was founded in 1957 in the Loire valley, which is known for its beautiful Cabernet Fran. The estate is family operated by the Genet Family, who purchased the Domaine from Charles Joguet in the late 80s, leaving Charles on board for a while to help with quality and smooth transition. Under new ownership, the Genet's sought to push the Domaine further and converted all of their vineyards to organic, which took ten years to become fully certified in 2016. The Domaine has quite a few different cuvees from many different vineyards sites, and all of them are vinified separately to show off their individual and unique characteristics. The Clos de la Dioterie is the top wine here, a monopole, and one of two historic clos vineyards of the Domaine located next to the winery itself. The vineyard features 70 to 80 years old vines planted on clayey, highly calcareous terroir, and its northeast exposure is ideal for perfect ripening. The yields here are very low and imbue a great concentration to the wine. This is typically the last plot harvested, seeking the best possible ripeness. Grapes are sorted multiple times, and great care is taken to make sure that this is the best it can be. It requires meticulous attention to detail, monitoring the vinification, making sure the maceration is correct, and overall ensuring that the vineyard character translates to the glass. It's a timeless wine and has the potential to age for decades under the right conditions and is one of the gems of Chinon. Compared to a Right Bank Bordeaux below, this is an exceptional vintage for the Clos de la Dioterie and is one of the top vintages ever for Joguet. We have some rare magnums of this magnificent cuvee which are the only ones available in the USA, and it is simply a spectacular bottle.

Vinous (Rebbecca Gibb MW) 95 points! "The 2017 Chinon Clos de la Dioterie retains its great depth of color and feels incredibly young compared with many other 2017s from the region. Demonstrating excellent concentration and full body, it is round and without any angles. There's plenty of stuffing here, yet it remains elegant and coats the mouth with a delightfully fine tannic veil. You could drink it now, but that would be infanticide. If you like classy Right Bank wines that use Cabernet Franc as their base, you'll be pleasantly surprised at this wine."
