One of our favorite expressions of Barbaresco, the wines from Giuseppe Cortese, are incredible buys that carry big quality for such a small asking price. Giuseppe Cortese is a classic Barbaresco Producer, and the wines are hard to find in the US but have slowly been gaining popularity over the past decade. This is one of Galloni's favorite locations to visit, and he has always spoken highly of this well-deserving estate. Rabaja is one of Barbarescos' great vineyards, and this wine comes from vines planted between 1958-1978. The fruit here is the same quality as the riserva but doesn't go through the ritual of extended aging before release. Scores below are a little conservative because they were tasted on release, as Galloni mentions, so with some time in the bottle, this should really start to shine. Classic Barbaresco from a stellar vineyard and vintage at a great price; what more can a Piedmont fan ask for? We have low pricing on some of the only bottles of this beauty, and it's one of the not to miss best buys of the vintage.
Antonio Galloni 94 pts! "The 2019 Barbaresco Rabajà has just been bottled, so it is rather nervous, but its completeness on the palate is pretty evident. Rose petal, orange peel, spice, mint and sweet pipe tobacco open with a bit of coaxing. There is a feeling of transparency in the 2019 that is so appealing, while the natural richness of the year builds effortlessly over time. (Drink between 2026 - 2039)"
Decanter 93 pts! "Graphite, pot pourri, black cherry and wild strawberry aromas. Dense and structured tannins with a savoury tone. Chocolatey finish with good fruit concentration and complexity, will evolve. (Drink between 2022 - 2039)"
Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) 93 pts! "With fruit from the village of Barbaresco, the 2019 Barbaresco Rabajà is glossy and bright with dried berry, cassis, aniseed and candied orange peel. This silky wine offers medium length, silky tannins and easy freshness."
