It has a tightly wound bouquet that requires a lot of aeration. Eventually it reveals fabulous, detailed aromas of cassis, bilberry jam, crushed stone and pressed violets, later hints of orange blossom and quince. The palate is pure class. Saturated tannins, wonderful structure but the headline is the intensity of fruit. No problem! This too is a legend in the making, as the wine soars from the glass in a blaze of botrytized fruit- tangerines, yellow plums, fresh apricots, as well as honeycomb, gloriously deep and complex soil tones and a topnote of orange zest. The nose here is deeper, more youthful and perhaps, in the fullness of time, slightly even more profound than the brilliant Le Mont version. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and very intensely flavored, with the inherent power of the vintage seamlessly woven into an elegant girdle of ripe acids and stunning minerality. The finish is very, very long, brisk and focused, with flawless balance and a distinct closing note of pink grapefruit (that does not make an appearance in the nose at all- even after being open for a week in the refrigerator). Costanti is one of the truly classic producers of Tuscany, and their Brunello has seen very little change over the years, staying firmly rooted in tradition. The Costanti family’s history in Montalcino dates back to the 1500s, and they were among the earliest families to help define Brunello's identity and bring the region's wines into the modern world. Today, the estate farms 12 hectares of organically worked vineyards at roughly 400 meters elevation, where galestro soils, high-altitude freshness, and careful farming all contribute to the complexity and balance that define the wines. Current winemaker Andrea Costanti has often emphasized the impact that vineyard elevation and organic farming have on aromatic complexity, and after tasting mature bottles, it is easy to see why. The 2015 vintage was a dream year for Brunello, giving ripe fruit, depth, and polished tannins, and Costanti’s version is one of the estate’s most significant modern efforts, combining the generosity of the vintage with the structure, elegance, and restraint of a truly traditional house. It is also especially rare to find great Brunello in half-bottle format, making this a very compelling way to access one of Montalcino’s top classic producers in this fun size. The Jouard Domaine has a rich history in Chassagne; founded in the early 1800s, they produce some of the best values in the appellation, but their wines are rare and hard to get hold of, so we are only seldom able to offer these excellent wines. The two brothers, Vincent and Francois, have been running this Chassagne-Montrachet-based Domaine since the 90s, and nearly every wine they make comes from old vines, and for the Morgeot Fairendes VV, the vines are closing in on 90 years old! Fairendes is a special parcel within Morgeot located at the top of the slope, next to Grands Ruchottes, most famously made by JM Pillot. However, Jouard's vines are significantly older, and is hands down the best buy this vintage. The 2023 vintage brings ripe citrus and stone fruit, white flowers, and cool crushed-rock notes, carried by lively acidity and a long, chalky finish that will broaden with three to five years in bottle and continue positively for a decade. For clients, this is a high-confidence buy made with true old-vine material, apparent premier-cru depth, and made in the estate's transparent style at low pricing. Sourced from 35 sites in what Roederer calls the “La Rivière” vineyards, it blends Pinot Noir from the warmer Cumières terroirs with Chardonnay from cooler, limestone-driven Chouilly, with the final blend for 2017 being 68% Pinot Noir and 32% Chardonnay. True to Roederer’s signature infusion method, a portion of Chardonnay juice is added to the Pinot Noir maceration, allowing them to ferment together and bringing finesse to the Pinot depth. A share of the base wines sees oak, and only partial malolactic is allowed to keep richness in check. These centenarian vines produce tiny, concentrated berries with naturally low yields, giving the wine its signature depth and intensity. Raymond Usseglio made his first wine in 1949 after immigrating from Italy in the 1930s but formally established the Domaine in 1963. His son Stéphane took over in 1999 at just 22 and has since led the estate to certified organic and biodynamic farming, crafting both classic and innovative expressions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The 2022 vintage, warm yet balanced, perfectly aligns with the strengths of the Impériale style: ripe, expressive Grenache that avoids over-extraction or oak influence, thanks to fermentation in concrete and élevage without the use of new barrels. As always it comes from three Grenache parcels: la Serres, La Crau and La Guigasse (there are 2 hectares in each parcel). In both 2015 and 2016 this cuvée wasn’t destemmed and was brought up mostly in tank, with 15-20% in demi-muids. The 2016 spent a huge 45 days on skins before being pressed to barrel. This beauty offers the fine, finesse-driven style of the vintage, yet has full-bodied depth and richness as well as sensational notes of framboise, crushed flowers, licorice, Christmas fruitcake and spice. It’s in the top handful of wines in the vintage and will benefit from short-term cellaring and have 20+ years of overall longevity. This estate hasn’t missed a beat in the past decade (or more) and their 2015s and 2016s both check-in near the top of the pyramid. It’s worth noting that this estate has started including slightly more stems than in the past while pulling back on the new barrels. Nevertheless, this is one estate who’s wines handle their oak elevage beautifully. They’ve also created a new white special cuvee based on Grenache Blanc and Clairette, and it’s a terrific wine worth seeking out (although I don’t know the price point).

Wine Spectator 94 pts!

The 2023s from Jean Pascal are sensational, and we have one of their top premier crus this vintage, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chalumeaux. Though not featuring as much grenache this year, this Mourvèdre-led vintage offers dark berry fruit, violet, spice, garrigue, and stony mineral notes, with a dense, silky palate and the kind of length and aging potential that have made Beaucastel one of the enduring reference points of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

James Suckling 97 points! "Dense licorice and forest berry aromas mask the deep tannin structure of this Chateauneuf-du-Pape masterpiece. The Counoise was more savoury, with more depth and tannin; tense and saline, and spicy thanks to 50% whole-bunch fermentation. The Grenache was soft and supple, fairly dark in colour, quite structured, with impressive freshness, tannins and acidity. The Syrah was deep, intense, black-fruited and peppery – quite potent in alcohol, with intense tannins. A tiny four-hectare family domaine established in the village in 1901, Gallois farms just one hectare of Premier Cru vineyards across Combe aux Moines, Les Goulots, and Petits Cazetiers, and this cuvée historically brings together the minuscule Goulots and Petits Cazetiers lots when there is too little wine to bottle them separately. The vines in these parcels date to 1974 and 1959, respectively, giving the wine a depth and authority that old vines have. The warm, dry 2020 season produced ripe, exceptionally clean fruit, but yields at the domaine fell to only around 19 hectoliters per hectare, resulting in a wine of unusual concentration. In fact, 2018 marks the end of an era for the cuvée, as it is the final vintage in which Roederer included Chardonnay from Chouilly. Increasingly ripe and expressive Pinot Noir from Verzy has allowed the house to push the wine even further toward the identity of its historic Montagne de Reims vineyards. Twenty-eight percent of the wine was vinified in oak, and only 20% underwent malolactic fermentation. It spent four years aging in Roederer’s cellars before disgorgement, with an additional minimum of six months of rest, finished with a dosage of 7 grams per liter. The 2018 is wonderfully complete, with red currant, wild raspberry, and blood orange layered with flowers, spice, smoke, and crushed stone, followed by a broad, finely textured palate, persistent mousse, and a long, tangy, saline finish.
