Having tasted back to the 50s, we have more experience with their wines than anyone else, and we can honestly say that these are wines of class, tradition, and place. They can be a little assertive when young, but these are made and meant to be cellared for 20 years or more. The Crus are virtually indestructible, and even in weaker vintages, there is a firm consistency that is innate in almost every bottle. The 2005s from Gaunoux are incredible. It was a vintage that needed plenty of time in the cellar before one could even consider opening but are finally starting to blossom out of its youthful austerity and will continue to develop for decades if desired. The bouquet is very, very deep and currently very closed, as it reluctantly offers up a stunning mélange of cherries, blood orange, smoke, gamebirds, a great base of complex soil tones, an exotic touch of mint, orange zest and mustard seed in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid right to the sappy core, with beautifully tangy acids, ripe, substantial tannins and absolutely brilliant length and grip on the still very primary finish. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely reserved out of the blocks, with an excellent core of fruit, fine-grained tannins and a long, soil-driven and complex finish. As mentioned, Charmes-Dessus is an excellent location at the top of the Les Charmes vineyard, connecting to Les Perrières, and is prime Premier Cru territory. This bottle has consistently been one of the best buys for Charmes over the past few years, and 2020 is one of the best examples from Chateau de Meursault of all time. This has entered a nice window for enjoyment and will continue to age very well for at least another decade. The name of the vineyard comes from how steep this site is and how it would hurt the workers' feet when tending the vines. Michel is a one-person show and does most of the work in the vineyard and the cellar himself, never using herbicides or pesticides, plowing between the vines, and limiting yields with a more hands-off approach in the cellar. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Serpentieres is one of the best vineyards in Savigny and produces the best wine at this Domaine, featuring gravelly soils with iron-rich marl and some clay. The Serpentieres comes from an old-vine plot planted in the 1930s, giving the vines significant age.
