The wines from Louis Boillot can be quite good, and we have one of the favorites today from his Gevrey-Chambertin holdings, Champonnet. With the help of his wife, Ghislaine Barthod, the wines have never been better, and the two reside in Chambolle-Musigny, where they share a cellar. Louis Boillot is always a producer to look for when it comes to classic wines, and his Gevrey crus are outstanding, many of which have some very old vines in the vineyard.
The Champonnets has consistently been one of the finest premier crus from this address. It is a small site that ranks among some of the best premier crus in Gevrey, encircled by many of the top crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. This site was passed down through the Boillot family, and Louis Boillot arguably makes the best example of this vineyard in Burgundy. 2017 is exceptional as one of Boillot's best examples of Champonnets of all time. It is a wine that can be approached now after a few years in the bottle but will continue to age for years to come. We have the only bottles in the US right now, making this a rare find and at pricing much lower than other vintages.
John Gilman 93 points! "Like so many of these wines in the Boillot cellars this year, the 2017 Champonnets is already beautifully expressive aromatically and offers up a perfumed constellation of red plums, fraises du bois, cherries, roses, a great base of soil, mustard seed, cedar and an exotic topnote of lavender. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, long and very refined, with a sappy core, great soil signature, suave tannins and a long, poised and beautifully focused finish. Great juice."
Burghound 91-93 points! "An equally restrained nose combines both upper and lower register elements that include red cherry and pomegranate with those of plum, earth and forest floor. There is notably better concentration, power and punch to the broad-shouldered flavors that possess evident muscularity and minerality on the compact and serious finale that delivers sneaky good length. A Gevrey 1er of relative refinement."
