2017 Casa Castillo Jumilla Vino de Finca

$17.99
2017 Casa Castillo Jumilla Vino de Finca

Sampled just a few days ago, this is very impressive at this level and an exceptional value. Casa Castillo is considered the best address for wines in Jumilia, and winemaker José María Vicente states that it is the best vintage since 1991. The vines experienced a perfect ripening cycle, and the resulting wine is very balanced and elegant. It is nice to see value bottles that show more of the soil character like this does instead of purely just fruit. The Vino de Finca is a blend of Monastrell, commonly known as Mourvedre and Granacha, or Granache sourcing from four different locations featuring different soil types with the common factor being limestone. Jose chose to dig up old syrah and cabernet vines and plant Grenache for the soil similarities to Chateauneuf du Pape at his estate. The vines are between 10-50 years old and are farmed organically. The grapes are hand harvest and sorted with partial destemming before pressing, and the juice is transferred to 1200 liter barrels where it ferments with natural yeasts. This is unbelievable at this price with fantastic depth, complexity, structure, and minerality. Vino de Finca is one of the best sub 20 dollar bottles we have tried and is an untapped source for great wines that we will be keeping an eye on.

Wine Advocate (Luis Guttierez) 93+ points! "There is a big jump in depth, complexity and nuance between the Monastrell and the 2017 Vino de Finca, which is a blend of Monastrell with almost 25% Garnacha. This comes from four plots that were selected from what was previously used for the entry-level Monastrell; they aim was to find a wine with more finesse and elegance but with the inherent power of the zone. This is only the third vintage for this cuvée, and it feels quite established and different from the rest of the range; it has less varietal character and is more about the place, getting closer to the single-vineyard bottlings where they do not search for fruit character. The idea here is to ferment at temperatures that are quite so low and to stabilize the wine in oak barrels for a long-ish time (12 months in 500-liter barrels and 5,000-liter oak foudres). They are wines of sun and limestone. This is a good reflection of it with a perfumed and floral note on the finish (elegance!) that is quite remarkable. 31,000 bottles produced in 2017. It was bottled in November 2018."
