The Albarinos from Manuel Moldes have become instant classics as favorites among our clients. We have another fantastic vintage from this address, the new release of the Afelio, which takes a slight edge over the 2020 with a bit more richness, depth, and texture with more upfront appeal right off the blocks. It is a very cerebral wine, and we rarely see so much going on in the bottle at such a modest asking price. We have excellent pricing on this fantastic Spanish white wine, and if you enjoyed the other vintages of Moldes or were maybe on the fence before, this is the one to try and is one of the ultimate buys for the category.
These wines are delicious, quickly becoming some of our favorite old-world whites for how much quality they jam pack at this pricing. This is from Galicia, Spain, one of the world's most challenging growing regions, with lots of rain and humidity, making it a nightmare for those working the vines. For this reason, Manuel Moldes is a fanatic in the vineyard and the cellar, giving it his all to produce great Alberino. The vines here grow uniquely, and much like in Carema, Italy, these also grow on 8-foot tall pergolas between 200 to 400 feet of elevation. These ancient vineyard sites have been used for hundreds of years for growing grapes and feature prized granite soils. The vines are tended sustainably, with grapes fermenting in small stainless steel vats and old french oak blended after a brief aging period. The result is fantastic, world-class Alberino that blows away anything we have tasted in the last several years—showing aromas of fresh quince, stone fruits, lime blossoms, thyme, and liquid minerals that jump from the glass. There is incredible depth, precision, and focus with layers of flavors on the palate, mainly apple, kiwi, and fresh citrus, kept in check by excellent acidity and a palate-staining finish of dry extract lingers for minutes. If you love Albarino, this is the best buy and one of the most outstanding examples of this variety worth every penny of its $26.99 price tag.
