We sampled this last week and immediately fell in love with its crystalline purity and tight mineral character that reminded us of many classic Chablis. Puddara is a very vineyard driven, and transparent Caracante sourced from Biancacavilla on the eastern side of Mt. Etna from pre-phylloxera vines planted in 1950. The grapes are crushed whole cluster after a careful selection and fermented in 3500-liter French oak barrels. The wine ages on the fine lees for 6 to 8 months, which brings some roundness and richness to the palate before bottling. Puddara is a fresh wine with intense minerality, perfect for some lighter fare like yellowtail carpaccio on the fancier end of things. Since this is not the current release, this has had some time to build in the bottle, and we have to say Monica's Score below is a little conservative in its current state but a great note nonetheless. Puddara is so impressive and one of the top examples or Caracante that we have had the pleasure of trying.
Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) 91 points! "The 2016 Etna Bianco Carricante A' Puddara is a terrific wine with lots of territory-driven character. This is a lean white wine that shows enough volume and texture to be considered a mid-weight wine to pair with shellfish or more sophisticated seafood dishes. The bouquet offers a lot of fragrant intensity with preserved lemon, white peach and crushed volcanic rock. Some 10,000 bottles were produced. Fruit is sourced from pre-phylloxera vines planted 940 meters above sea level."
