We have some Chateau Talbot today in excellent condition today (pictured above). Château Talbot, a Saint-Julien Fourth Growth per the 1855 Classification, originates from a 102-hectare vineyard planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and minor quantities of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. While a bit of an underdog vintage, there are great examples to be found, and this is one of the top wines from Talbot from the 70s. The 1978 vintage benefitted from a long growing season with a cool, wet spring and a warm, dry autumn, producing structured, age-worthy wines with notable acidity and moderate alcohol. Château Talbot has a long-standing reputation, with ownership by the Cordier family since 1918, emphasizing traditional winemaking, including fermentation in stainless steel and aging in French oak barrels, typically with 50% new oak. The 1978 exemplifies the estate’s focus in the 70s and has received some great recent notes on CellarTracker over the past three years, making it an excellent choice for Bordeaux with age!
