2000 Duval-Leroy Champagne Femme de Champagne Magnum

John Gilman 94+ Duval-Leroy’s Femme de Champagne has become one of my favorite Tête de Cuvées in the last few years, as the quality seems to have gotten stronger and stronger with each passing vintage. The 2000 rendition may well be the finest I have yet tasted from this fine house and is worth a special search of the market to locate. The blend this year is ninety-five percent chardonnay and five percent pinot noir and a small percentage of the cuvée has been barrel-fermented. The nose is deep, pure and utterly beautiful, as it soars from the glass in a blend of pear, lemon zest, delicious apples, a fine base of limestone, pain grille and lemon blossoms in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and poised on the attack, with a very racy personality, a rock solid core of fruit, impeccable focus and balance, very refined mousse, and stunning length and grip on the very young and nascently complex finish. I would not touch a bottle of this great wine for at least another three or four years, for though it is accessible out of the blocks, there are layers here yet to unfold. Gorgeous juice. (Drink between 2015-2050)

Jeb Dunnuck 94 points (rated 3/12/18) - The 2000 Femme comes all from grand cru sites and is 95% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir. It offers a ripe, rounded, impressively layered and concentrated profile that's very much in the style of the 2000 vintage. Stone fruits, brioche, charcoal, and spice characteristics give way to a full, rich, and layered Champagne that has a vibrant mouse and a clean finish. It’s drinking beautifully today. (Drink between 2018-2028)
