2004 Pol Roger Cuvee Winston Churchill

$189.99
2004 Pol Roger Cuvee Winston Churchill

The 2004 Sir Winston is one of the most overlooked versions of this Cuvee in the last decade. I think its better than 2002, and possibly even better than 2008. This Champagne possesses incredible focus, refinement, and now the complexity is starting to develop. The Sir Winston is starting to drink now, and our price is close to or at the original release price!

Decanter (Stephen Brook) 98 pts! Sir Winston is looking particularly dignified and refined in 2004, with a surprisingly primary, youthful air, yet all the understated poise that one can expect of this classic cuvée. A cascade of impeccably refined acidity swirls into a river of minerality that flows deep and swift all the way to the distant horizon. Effortless grace and youthful vigour lurk under that distinguished exterior. Dense grilled nuts nose, backward and youthful, and shows aromatic depth at the expense of immediate charm. The palate is rich, broad, and weighty, very concentrated, achieving a majestic style that's biscuitty and powerful. Although accessible now it will certainly improve with more bottle age that will allow the flavours to unfurl. Long. (Drink between 2015-2034)

John Gilman 96 pts! The 2004 Pol Roger “Cuvée Winston Churchill” is an outstanding young wine. It is a blend of old vine chardonnay and pinot noir, as Pol Roger stipulates that they will only use fruit for this bottling from grand cru vineyards that were planted during Churchill’s lifetime (he passed away in 1965). The wine was aged eleven years sur latte and finished with a dosage of eight grams per liter. The bouquet of the 2004 offers up a deep and complex constellation of apple, just a whisper of tangerine, fresh-baked bread, gentle notes of hazelnut, a beautifully complex base of soil and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and full-bodied, with bottomless depth at the core, utterly refined mousse, lovely focus and grip and a very long, complex and elegant finish. This is quite open for a 2004, but with the impeccable balance to also age long and gracefully. Very high class juice. (Drink between 2016-2040)
