2005 Château Pape Clément

$229.99
2005 Château Pape Clément
We were able to get hold of some late-release bottles straight from Pape Clement. An old address located in Pessac Leognan, Pape Clement, has been making wine since 1252, though at the time, the Chateau was called Domaine de la Mothe. In 1306 the Chateau was gifted to the current pope, Pope Clement V, by the current owner and relative, Gaillard de Goth, where the Chateau got its name. In the 1980s, the Chateau saw an upsurge in quality after being picked up by french entrepreneur and owner of multiple chateaus, Bernard Magrez. Since that time, the wines of Pape Clement had never been better, and today they are still riding that wave, producing notable wines as one of the most important of the 16 Chateaus of the Cru Classe de Graves. As mentioned, this is a late release from the property from one of the legendary vintages of Bordeaux, 2005. A bar setting vintage, 2005 is the basis for some of the most extraordinary wines ever made in Bordeaux, and the Pape Clement is no different. 2005 is a sensational wine, showing off a 55-45 blend of Melot and Cabernet Sauvignon; it is one of the most outstanding wines ever made by Pape Clement. Two huge more recent notes below on this wine, we have excellent pricing here on this not to miss Bordeaux that is showing so well now but could spend another decade or more in the cellar. An incredible buy for Bordeaux; ex-cellar, from a great vintage and producer, we can't ask for much more.

Wine Advocate (Robert Parker) 99 points! "Owned by Bernard Magrez, this great terroir a few miles from Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion has produced one of the superstars of the vintage. A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, Pape Clement’s 2005 has an opaque purple color and smoky barbecue and chocolaty notes intermixed with cassis and blackberries. There is also some underlying minerality in this full-bodied, super-concentrated wine, which has wonderfully sweet, well-integrated tannins. This majestic, multidimensional wines is one of the great, great wines of the vintage. It should drink well for at least another 25 years. (2015)"

Antonio Galloni 96 points! "The 2005 Pape Clément is a blockbuster. Rich, heady and explosive, the 2005 packs a serious punch. Inky black fruit, new leather, spice, menthol, chocolate, gravel and scorched earth are all kicked up in this decidedly flamboyant Pessac-Léognan. The 2005 boasts tremendous depth, but equally lavish new oak. Even with all of the oak, the 2005 is fabulous. It just could have been more, a lot more. Ultimately, the 2005 is a wine of its era more than anything else. (2021)"
