2005 Domaine Alain Michelot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles 375mL
John Gilman 90-92 points (rated Mar/Apr 2007) - I wondered why the les Cailles was shown first of the premier cru Nuits (certainly not the order I would have chosen, as I love this particular terroir), and as the vines are not on the young side, having been half planted in 1945 and half in the mid-1960s. The nose on the 2005 is deep and quite primary, as it offers up a classic mélange of red and black cherries, dark chocolate, game, earth, vinesmoke and a nice note of fresh nutmeg as it opens in the glass. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, chewy and quite closed today, with a fine, sappy core of fruit, ripe tannins, and a long, complex and soil-driven finish. This will be a very good example of this lovely vineyard. (Drink between 2017-2035)
