2006 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Special Club Millesime de Collection Magnum$179.99
We just had a magnum of his with our Thanksgiving dinner and we are happy to report it was absolutely stunning. I would go as far as to say it was better than the last bottle of 2006 Taittinger Comtes, and 2006 Salon we had also recently tasted. This Champagne has incredible purity and focus with tons of stone fruits, citrus, saline, and a wonderful honed note with aeration. A truly monumental effort from this ripe vintage, and decidedly better because of the later disgorgement, and magnum size. Wow!
It's fun and rare when we can find older vintage ex-cellar magnums of grower bubbles. This Champagne over the years has been one of our favorites, especially in magnum. I have blown through several magnums of 2002, and I’m super jazzed to try this 2006 unless we sell it all today, then C’est la vie. These magnums are a recent release from the property, and I’m sure they will drink way above the vinous 92 pt. Score below!
Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 92 pts! Light, green-tinged yellow. Aromas of melon, fresh fig, honey and pear skin, along with a citrussy overtone. Dense and broad but lively too, boasting very good concentration to its orange, honeydew and poached pear flavors. Energetic, fruity and very long on the finish, featuring a bright, chalky quality and a hint of sweet butter.
