One of the biggest names in wine has been the Rothchild family, stretching from Champagne to Argentina, and most famously, Bordeaux. Their power and standards have delivered some of the most incredible wines, especially in Bordeaux, but their Champagnes are exceedingly good. The Baron de Rothchild Champange's don't come to the USA in large quantities, and these are some of the only bottles available in the USA right now. 2008 spent seven years aging on the lees with an extended time in the cellar before release—a complex and powerful Champagne with exotic notes, orchard fruit, and dried aromas. The palate has excellent balance and attack with citron, chalky minerality, and vibrant acidity and is a perfect example of the 2008 vintage for Chardonnay in Champagne. A great bottle to drink over the holidays and also a great gift. We opened one of these last New Years' Eve, which was an excellent way to enjoy the night. These bottles are being released from the domaine right now and should arrive around the second week of December.
Antonio Galloni 95 points! "The 2008 Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Speciale is a blend of fruit from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Avize and Cramant. Deep, resonant and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2008 is super-impressive. I especially admire the way the wine fleshes out with a bit of air. Citrus, sage, menthol and dried flowers add nuance to what is a very powerful wine. The 2008 saw full malolactic fermentation, with some bâtonnage for added texture. This is a superb showing from the Rothschild family."
