2008 Philipponnat Champagne Extra Brut Mareuil-Sur-Ay

$189.99
2008 Philipponnat Champagne Extra Brut Mareuil-Sur-Ay
One of the great houses holding one of the most excellent Premier Cru sites in Champagne, Philipponnat, dates 1522. Once suppliers of Champagne for the court of King Louis XIV, Philipponnat has long been an address that is a favorite among Champagne connoisseurs and represents the exceptional. A more recent creation for the house, Mareuil-Sur-Ay, is part of a line of single-plot or specific plot bottlings which come from within the Clos des Goisses vineyard. In the case of the Mareuil-Sur-Ay, the grapes are sourced only from Pinot Noir Plots from the upper section of the Clos des Goisses vineyard, which consists of very clayey soil with a small percentage of adjacent fruit. This is a unique expression of the Clos des Goisses vineyard as it is a Blanc de Noirs, in contrast to the 2008 Clos des Goisses which was 55% Chardonnay. It is a great buy for 2008, and seeing that the 2008 Clos des Goisses is going for over $300, this is an excellent alternative with similar expression and at a friendlier price point. Two outstanding notes below capturing the complexity, depth, and structure of this Champagne; we have the only bottles available in the USA right now.

Wine Advocate 96 points! "The 2008 Mareuil-sur-Aÿ Extra Brut is one of a trio of single-plot cuvées, of which 2008 is the second vintage after 2006. Grown in several upper plots of the Clos des Goisses that are entirely planted with Pinot Noir (on more clayey soils), vinified 44% in wooden barrels (without malolactic fermentation), the 2008 Mareuil offers a clear, fresh and precise bouquet of red fruits, dark cherries and black chocolate. The palate is beautifully pure and fresh, very fine, elegant and light but also complex and is provided with a long, tensioned, very mineral and exciting finish. It is filigreed, very salty and stimulating in the aftertaste. Aged for at least seven years in the House’s cellars, the 2008 is only the second vintage after 2006. Disgorged in September 2017. Tasted at the domaine in April 2018. Total production: 3,339 bottles."

John Gilman 94+ points! "The 2008 Mareuil-sur-Aÿ bottling is composed entirely of pinot noir and most of the vins clairs were barrel-fermented and raised in older casks, without undergoing malolactic fermentation. A smaller percentage of the vins clairs are raised in tank and do undergo malo. The wine was disgorged in September of 2017 and finished with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter. Not all of the fruit hails directly from the Clos des Goisses for this bottling, with a small percentage of the grapes coming from plots that lie adjacent to the famous Clos. This was first produced in the 2006 vintage and this outstanding 2008 is the second vintage to be released. It offers up a superb young bouquet of white peach, apple, patissière, chalky soil tones, a touch of dried flowers and a gentle topnote of smokiness. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and beautifully structured, with ripe, well-integrated acids, excellent depth at the core, elegant mousse, impressive purity and a long, complex and zesty finish. This is certainly approachable at age ten, but in reality is still a young wine and I would be inclined to let it blossom with a bit more time in the cellar. It is a beautiful wine in the making."
