Gimonnet is one of the addresses that come to mind when we think about our favorite Grower Champagne Producers. Over the years, we have always been mesmerized by these Champagnes, which have become an integral part of the grower champagne community.
The Gimonnet family has been in the Village of Cuis since the 17th century, working the vineyards as laborers, sharecroppers, and winegrowers. The Gimonnet house is one of the family's main assets, and today they own almost 30 hectares of prized Champagne vineyards. The family has always been driven to make the best Champagne possible. This dedication has not gone unnoticed, becoming one of the favorite addresses for grower Champagne among the savvy.
We have a back vintage of the Oenophile today from 2008, which is a phenomenal vintage, as many know. This is Blanc de Blancs comprised of 76% grand cru fruit and 24% premier cru fruit (32.5% Chouilly, 33.% Cramant, 22% Cuis, 10% Oger, and 2% Vertus). The Oenophile is a non-dose Champagne and sees zero dosage. To compensate for this, Gimonnet leaves it on the lees for an extended period to let it round out and gain balance. It's a racy and mineral-driven Blanc de Blancs with incredible complexity from the time on the lees and is incredibly pure. The 2008 Oenophile is ready to enjoy now, and we have some of the only bottles available in the USA. It's an excellent buy for the vintage and producer, highly recommended for grower Chamnpagne fans.
James Suckling 96 points! "Very dry and rich with fantastic fruit and depth. Full and minerally. So much depth and intensity. Dried apple, pear and pineapple. Super length."
Antonio Galloni 93 points! "The 2008 Extra-Brut Non-Dosé Oenophile is bristling with energy and tension, but it also lacks a bit of mid-palate pliancy, which leads me to wonder if the zero dosage style is truly optimal in this vintage. Lemon oil, white flowers, sage and chalk are all pushed forward. The 2008 is bracing and classically austere, with notable intensity throughout. Vineyard sources are 33.5 % Cramant, 32.5% Chouilly, 22% Cuis, 10% Oger and 2% Vertus. Disgorged: June 2015. (Drink between 2015 - 2022)"
