A few cases remain of the extra brut rendition of Pierre Moncuit's 2008 Blanc de Blancs. As we mention below, this is the version that our clients should prefer with its lower dosage and impeccable mineral purity. This is one of the last great buys for excellent 2008 grower Champagne available, and we have low pricing on some of the only bottles in the USA.
Though we offered the Brut version of this excellent Champagne a while back, an Extra-Brut version was also made that was equally great, receiving a nice note from Galloni last winter. We think the Extra-Brut is more suited to our client's palates, most of which prefer lower dosage Champagne, and besides the dosage, this is the same. Disgorged in November of last year after 12 years on the lees, Pierre Moncuits no recipe philosophy is perfect for a vintage like 2008 where the quality of the crop was exceptional, and the goal is always to show off the best the year has to offer. An extraordinary expression of the Mesnil-sur-Ogier terroir, the extra brut version has more purity and definition, as Galloni mentions below, and with a bit more focus on the minerality. A stunning bottle, this Blanc de Blanc is on the level of Champagne's twice the price and is one of the ultimate buys in the category. The extra brut is a more sophisticated version of an already great bottle.
Antonio Galloni 94 points! "Moncuit's Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Millesimé shows a different facet of its personality in this version, with lower dosage vis-à-vis the Brut version. Here the flavors are brighter and more sculpted throughout. Hints of toastiness, almond and tangerine oil add an exotic flair that makes the Extra Brut absolutely beguiling. Lower dosage seems to exalt the minerality and bright acids of the year, while pushing the fruit a bit into the background. Both Brut and Extra Brut bottlings are terrific; choosing among them comes down to personal preference. Dosage is grams per liter. Disgorged November 2020."
