2008 René Geoffroy Champagne Premier Cru Empreinte 1.5L

$129.99
2008 René Geoffroy Champagne Premier Cru Empreinte 1.5L

It has been some time since we have offered anything from Rene Geffroy, but when we found some magnums of the 2008 Empreinte, it seemed like a great time to get reacquainted with this address. Initially located in Cumieres in the heart of the Valle de la Marne, the roots of Geffroy date back to the 17th century with a few hectares of vines that were passed down over the generations, and it was Roger Geoffroy and his wife that took the plunge and decided to use these family vineyards to make their own line of Champagne. Roger passed at a young age, and it was up to his son Rene to take the reigns of this newly established winery which he did, becoming the most influential person of the Geoffroy family. Today the Geoffroy estate covers 14 hectares of vines in Damery, Hautvillers, and Fleury-la-Rivière, with their prized premier cru vines in Cumieres. Vineyard practices here are focused on the environment with the absence of herbicides and pesticides, allowing grasses to grow between vines and utilizing plowing and organic manure only. Only the best grapes are harvested and pressed using two traditional conquard presses, which allow for more accuracy in drawing the finest juice from the grapes. Geoffroy recently moved to a newer facility in Ay where they can utilize gravity to transfer juice, which is much gentler.

While the current release for the Empreinte is 2015 the Domaine recently released some magnums of 2008 which is an incredible vintage for this Champagne. Empreinte is one of the top bottles Geffroy produces, and the aim here is to create a stunning Champagne made from mostly Pinot Noir sourced from earlier ripening plots in Cummiers. Vines for this Cuvee are on average, 30 years old and planted on clay and chalky soils, giving the wines ample richness and minerality. It's a beautiful 2008 that is ready to enjoy and should outdrink the scores below in this larger format. Bottles from this vintage are getting harder to find, and we currently have low pricing on some of the only bottles of Empreinte in the USA.

Antonio Galloni 92 points! "The 2008 Brut Cuvée Empreinte is striking. Rich, nuanced and incredibly inviting, the 2008 possesses striking mid-palate sweetness and silkiness, with expressive red stone fruit, spice, licorice and floral notes that are woven together effortlessly. This is an especially open 2008 that can be enjoyed young, as its balance is impeccable. The Empreinte, one of the house's signature wines, is a blend of Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all from Cumières. Dosage is 6 grams/liter. Disgorged: November 2014."

John Gilman 92 points! "It has been a year since I last tasted the 2008 Empreinte from Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy, with this release having been disgorged eight months later than the one I tasted last summer. As I noted last year, this bottling is produced primarily from fruit from Cumières, with a bit of Hautvillers parcels added in, and the cépages is seventy percent pinot noir and fifteen percent each of pinot meunier and chardonnay, with eighty percent of the vins clairs barrel-fermented. There is no malo here. The new release carries its wood very nicely on the nose, wafting from the glass in a blend of apple, white peach, lovely soil tones, a touch of oak char and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and complex, with a lovely core, frothy mousse, fine focus and grip and the fairly long, complex and wide open finish. The recent disgorgement of the 2008 Empreinte is really singing right now and is a lovely glass of bubbly. (Drink between 2016-2030)"
