We have the new release of Henri Goutorbe's Special Club from the excellent 2012 vintage. Goutorbe is an excellent producer we have been keen on for many years. Based in the village of Ay in the Marne Valley, they got their start running a vine nursery long ago before cutting their teeth on Champagne production. Goutorbe makes fabulous Champagnes featuring fantastic Pinot Noir from Ay and are naturally great environmentally friendly farmers from their background in raising vines. The Special Club is a marvelous Champagne, and the best bottle Goutorbe produces. A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from the Grand Cru village of Ay is vinified in stainless steel. It shows intensity and mineral tension met with a profound richness and energy. It is textbook Goutorbe and a beautiful example of the house style. It is not uncommon for the Special Club to spend ten or more years on the lees, especially in an outstanding vintage like 2012, helping the Champagne build layers and complexity over time. This has just been released after an extended stay on the lees, and at the moment, we have some of the only bottles available in the world for the 2012 Special Club. This is a very promising vintage for Goutorbe, and while many producers are on to more current vintages, it is very fun to get a new release from 2012, especially at the same release pricing as the 2008. This is currently one of the top buys of the vintage for Special Club Champagne, and we have a limited amount available.
