We have been looking for some Bordeaux deals, and after the success of yesterday's back vintage offer, this looks to be another great one with a tremendous price-quality. La Grange is a third growth located in St. Julien, and their 118-hectare vineyard stretches over two large Gunzian Gravel slopes from north to south at the highest point of the appellation. For decades they have honed this terroir to make unique, elegant yet powerful wines that love the cellar. Here we have a great example of their excellence from 2014, which, while overlooked vintage at times, produced some fantastic bottles with Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Julien being particularly successful. In 2014 the vines here would have been 40 years old, and though the weather was tough, the wines were pretty classic with an excellent concentration and balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins. The blend for 2014 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot sourced from their grand vineyard providing fruit from multiple aspects, which ultimately delivers more complexity and intrigue to the finished wine. While it can be approached now, this has fantastic structure and will be able to age for another decade or more if desired and is a beautiful example of the estate and St. Julien in 2014. A great buy, we have friendly pricing here that makes a lot more sense compared to other classified growths, and all the bottles are in excellent condition. It's another no-brainer deal for Bordeaux not to miss.
Vinous (Neil Martin) 93 points! "The 2014 Lagrange was picked from 25 September until 17 October. It has an impressive bouquet with ample red cherry, cranberry and crushed strawberry fruit mixed with sage and cedar, good vigour and gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and plenty of freshness thanks to that silver bead of acidity. This is a vivid and vivacious Lagrange, one of the most charming and pretty in recent years. Superb. Tasted at the Lagrange vertical at the estate."
