Part of their big three of top crus, Cailles is always the most elegant of the trio and while still having the gamey, soil driven animal nuances of NSG, it always has a finesse and delicacy that are so rare to the village. Only the Chevillon brothers and Mugneret Gibourg sisters seem to be able to capture this expression. The vintage here helps such a character along as the 2014s are finely built, sneaky long, and we think when everyone looks back years from now will consider it a top vintage in the same league as the more hyped years and especially at this address. Nice notes below and a nice price above for one of the top wines of Red Burgundy still able to be had by mere mortals.
John Gilman 94 points! “The 2014 les Cailles from the Chevillon family is equally stunning. The bouquet is deep, pure and remarkably vibrant, jumping from the glass in a blaze of cherries, pomegranate, nutskin, woodsmoke, gamebird, stunning minerality and a deft framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with great elegance and depth, laser-like focus and a very long, tangy and ripely tannic finish. An absolutely superb and classic example of les Cailles.”
