We were able to procure a few more cases of this beauty bottle, that rivals the Clos Rougeard version at a fraction of the price. The 2015 vintage is a great one for this wine. It is also right up there in quality with some of the great right bank wines of Bordeaux that have high percentages of Cabernet Franc in the blend.
Antoine Sanzay, based out of Saumur-Champigny, has been pushing to the top of the game in the Loire for a few years now. Focusing on Cab Franc like his neighbor and vineyard sharing giants of “Les Poyeux”, Clos Rougeard. Antoine Sanzay shows the power of the little guy with a commitment to the expression the grape and the land. Sanzay’s presence among similar producers are part of the new wave of the Loire, creating expressive wines each unique to their own terroir, eyebrow lifting, often organic which is the case for Antoine Sanzay, yet not lacking depth or brilliance. The vines from Poyeux are over 50 years old at this point imbuing the grapes with a lovely concentration. A Juicy yet structured with the typical herbaceous notes from Cab Franc all seamlessly interwoven. This undoubtedly stands up to some of the Clos Rougeard cuvees at a fraction of the price. Antoine Sanzay one of the helmsmen of the Loire’s small Domaines and his tete de cuvee the Poyeux is a Giant slayer.
