2015 Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema Carema Riserva$26.99
The premier drink for princes and lords in days past, Carema is a Nebiolo dominate appellation with that lies northwest of Piedmont separating it from the Aosta Valley. An area rich in history and winemaking tradition dating as far back as 1460. Here the traditional vine-growing techniques are used where the vines grow above a stone pillar pergola high enough to walk under described by Barolo Producer Renato Ratti as the "Temples of Bacchus." The stone pillars soak up the sun during the day and provide some heat at night, similar to the rocks of Chateauneuf du Pape. Nebbiolo from this appellation has very moderate alcohol and shows sweet red fruits with complex floral and spice notes. The Riserva ages for three years and 18 months of that time is spent in large barrels. These wines also have very long life spans able to keep for up to 30 years, but can be drunk now, especially with some decanting. This is a serious value from a traditional appellation and producer that shows Nebbiolo in a different light. It is fascinating to see that when you step out of Barolo and Barbaresco, how good the wines are for the price, and there is no better example then from Cantina dei Produttori.
