We have a limited amount of this back vintage from this historic St. Emilion estate with interesting beginnings. Initially, part of a leper colony in the 17th century, which is referenced in the name of the Chateau with a play on the word gaffet, translating to 'leper.' But don't let this bizarre start fool you; this is a fantastic Premier Grand Cru Classe Chateau and really began to shine in the 70s. In 1971 the Chateau was picked up by Count Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg, and in 1985 passed it on to his son Stephan who remains the owner to this day and the figurehead for this historic estate. 2015 is an excellent vintage that reached incredible heights in some instances, and the Canon-la-Gaffelière is a top example of that quality as one of the best vintages of all time. 2015 was a warm vintage and was on track to be a very dry year before it was met with intense rainfall in August, then becoming one of the wettest. Across the region, grapes ripened at different times, with picking in St. Emilion happening in mid-October. The wines of St. Emilion were some of the best, not just on the right bank but in the entire region producing opulent, powerful wines with fantastic fruit and great candidates for early approachability. 2015 is one of the top examples from this Chateau of all time and is in a perfect place for enjoyment now but can cellared longer. We have a limited amount at this low pricing, and it is a fantastic buy for the category; nice notes below; this is a great choice for the Bordeaux lover.
Antonio Galloni 97 points! "The 2015 Canon La Gaffelière is deep, powerful and explosive. Seamless and captivating in the glass, it possesses magnificent richness, volume and intensity in every dimension. The Cabernet Franc, usually such a strong signature, is nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the Merlot fruit. Espresso, mocha, licorice and plum infuse the racy finish. The 2015 is going to need the better part of a decade to be expressive. Tasted two times."
Wine Advocate 97 points! "Composed of 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in French oak, 55% new, for 17 months, the 2015 Canon la Gaffeliere features a deep garnet-purple color and a cedar-laced nose to begin, giving way to fragrant underlying scents of roses and violets with a core of crushed black currants, blackberries and Bing cherries plus hints of fallen leaves and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, the seductively perfumed red and black fruit fills the mouth, framed with plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing very long and minerally."
James Suckling 96 points! "The aromas of violets and rose petals are prevalent here with blue fruits as well. Full body, integrated and firm tannins and a long finish. Structured yet fine and shows such finesse. Give it five or six years to come together."
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points! "From an incredible terroir just outside the village of Saint-Emilion and a blend of 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2015 Canon-La-Gaffeliere is a beautiful, elegant, complex beauty readers should snatch up. Blueberries, violets/spring flowers, Asian spices, and a salty minerality all emerge from this full-bodied, yet elegant 2015 that has sweet tannin, a big mid-palate, and a great, great finish. Still tight and reserved, give bottle 3-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following two decades or more."
