2015 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Special Club Grands Terroirs de Chardonnay

$69.99
2015 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Special Club Grands Terroirs de Chardonnay
We were able to get more of the Special Club from Gimmonet, one of the best and most consistent producers of the special club bottling. A favorite among grower Champagne fans, this is another exceptional rendition of this Champagne not to miss at this low pricing, and this time around has a few scores.

The Special Club is where the Champagnes from Gimonnet start to get very serious and comprise some of the oldest vines in Gimonnet's possession. Their Special Club made its debut in 1971, sourced from plots at least over 40 years old, two of which were planted in 1911 and 1913. The Special Club features some of the best plots here and is 100% Chardonnay, mainly from Grand cru fruit, with 60% coming from Cramant, 26% from Chouilly, and 14% from the premier cru Cuis. This is consistently one of the best examples of Special Club Champagne which must go through rigorous testing every vintage before it can be accepted in the Club. With excellent expression, it combines silky texture with finesse and elegance worthy of the most excellent Champagnes. For many years this was the flagship of the House, and while there are a few single village Special Clubs Gimonnet makes now, this is the original and is nothing short of excellent. 2015 has the potential to be a contender for one of the best of all time and spent four years on the lees, finished with a 5-gram dosage. We currently have some of the only bottles of this current release available at this friendly low price.

James Suckling 96 points! "Very complex nose of citrus blossoms, floral honey and brioche with a hint of fresh mushroom. Really concentrated, but so incredibly focused and precise, this is a masterpiece of chardonnay elegance! Very long and extremely mineral finish that lights up the sky like fireworks. A cuvée of wines from the Grand Cru villages of Cramant (60%) and Chouilly (26%) with wine from the 1er Cru village of Cuis (14%), the oldest vines dating back to 1911 and 1913. Drink or hold. (7/18/22)"

Tom Hewson (TimAtkin.com) 93 points! "Chardonnay from Cramant, Chouilly and Cuis. Wild apple and hedgerow present an involved, lightly savoury nose here with herb and pepper over slightly grippy dried peaches. Some of the extremity of 2015 is on show here, but it does make this an earlier bloomer than some iterations. (Dec 2022)"

Wine Spectator 92 points! "[$103 list] A vibrant blanc de blancs, with a chalky underpinning and a mouthwatering frame wrapped in the creamy mousse, which carries flavors of glazed pear and tangerine, creamed almond and candied ginger. Disgorged January 2022. Drink now through 2030. 60 cases imported. (11/30/22)"
