Decanter (Matt Walls) 97 points! From lieux-dits Mazard and La Côte, 80% destemmed. Sun-warmed herbs accompany sand, lavender and raspberry on the nose. It has good aromatic freshness and definition, and the full-bodied palate is also clean, super-fresh and lively. It's dense and ripe, defined by serrated tannins, keen acidity and a mouth-coating character. This is full of character, a very classic expression of Cornas that's not massive, but is detailed, clear and sinewy with mineral hints. Seriously good this year. (Drink between 2022-2036)
Jeb Dunnuck 93-95 points! Voge's old vine cuvée, the 2016 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes is a head turner that balances loads of clean, classic Syrah fruit with the textbook pepper, mineral and garrigue character that's the hallmark of the appellation. Full-bodied, elegant and balanced, with present yet fine tannin, it's going to be accessible in its youth, yet cruise for 10-15 years given its balance.<!--more-->Unfortunately, I had an off bottle of the 2015 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes, but I’ll purchase a bottle locally as soon as possible and update the report. Nevertheless, winemaker Albéric Mazoyer has produced brilliant 2015s and 2016s.
Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 92-95 points! "Deep bright-rimmed violet. Powerful, mineral-accented black currant, potpourri, olive paste and woodsmoke scents are sharpened by a peppery topnote. Displays impressive clarity and dark fruit thrust on the palate, offering smoke-tinged black and blue fruit and spicecake flavors and a suave suggestion of candied violet. The juicy, expansive finish is framed by velvety tannins and features a strong echo of floral pastilles."
