An old-world deal not to pass up, this is one of the ultimate Rioja buys of all time. This wine drinks way above its price tag and is one of the best values on today's market. Now is the last chance so don's miss out!
A fantastic old world value, Bodegas Burgo Viejo, is the combined efforts of 6 different families in Rioja who sold off most of the grapes in days of old. In total, these families working under the Bodegas Burgo Viejo banner hold 200 hectares of vines planted too many of the traditional varietals of the region, but here Tempernillo reigns supreme and is the highlight of this address. The vineyards range throughout the municipality of Alfaro at the foot of Yerga Mountain on the banks of the fertile Ebro Valley. This huge area proposes many different soil types and climates, offering an incredible amount of growing diversity, bring more complexity and depth to the finished product. Vines are tended, so yields are limited, and only the best grapes are harvested, a level of quality control missing in many larger-scale operations, which is why this address is a tremendous force. The style here is ultimately traditional with modern advancements used to improve the quality, which has been lead by forward-thinking winemaker Gorka Etxebarria since 2003. This is a hard-to-beat old-world value that should be on everyone's radar, with a huge Decanter score from a blind tasting. Bodegas Burgo Viejo Rioja Licenciado Reserva is the best buy for this great Rioja vintage, and we have the lowest price in the USA, don't miss it!
Decanter 95 points! Blind tasted by Sara Jane Evans MW, Simon Field MW, and Pierre Mansour "Bodegas Burgo Viejo is the property of six farming families and comprises more than 200ha of vineyards in the Rioja Oriental region, from where the more full-bodied styles of Rioja are produced (see ‘Regional Profile’, p42). Historically, the bodegas sold their high-quality grapes to neighbouring wineries, until the arrival of the young winemaker Gorka Etxebarria, who saw the potential for them to produce excellent wines themselves. Tempranillo is a firm favourite for this producer, despite Garnacha being the most widely planted grape in the area, and they certainly make a success of it, going by the many accolades they have received over the years. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Distinctly pure, vivid reserva, precise style: limpid fruit, brisk acidity, notable but well balanced oak. Classic. Simon Field MW: Intense colour, powerful aromas of tar and blue fruit; minty savoury, rich, lifted and long; an impressive reserva statement of intent. Pierre Mansour: Classy, spicy black fruit, full, round, generous – depth yet beautifully balanced, very classy, effortless."
