A wine that doesn't come to the US in large quantities, the 2016 vintage here is magic, and for 40 years, Cantina di Montalcino has been making beautiful wines. Cantina is the only co-operative winery operating in Montalcino and today has 94 members, which account for 160 hectares of vineyards in all four quadrants of the region. The number of vineyards spread all over allows for greater quality control, and where weather might have been particularly bad in some parts, those vineyards don't make it to the final blend here and will be a Rosso instead. As mentioned, these wines haven't been available in the US until a few years ago, where before were typically Europe only. 2016 here is a classic example and a fantastic buy for the category and how serious a bottle it is. We have an excellent price here, and this an incredible value for classically made old-world wine.
James Suckling 95 points! "This has a complex nose of black plums, cloves and cigar smoke. Lots of chocolate. It's full-bodied with good depth and intensity. Firm but ripe tannins. Chocolate and cherries on the finish. Drink after 2024."
