2016 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo

$39.99
2016 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo

A beautiful effort from this top producer in Tuscany that seems to fly under the radar compared to some of the bigger names. This bottle delivers exceptional quality for the price, and should age extremely well. We have tasted several bottles of this wine with 10 years of age or more, and they have been very impressive!

“Castello di Ama’s San Lorenzo is named after one of the estate’s four valleys planted to vines. This wine is a blend of the best vineyards of the estate from vines more than 10 years old. Owner and winemaker Marco Pallanti ages it for 12 to 13 months in barriques, 30 percent of which are new, with the remainder one- to three-years-old. After unifying the blend in stainless steel tanks for four months, it ages another year in bottle before release.” B.S.

Wine Spectator (Bruce Sanderson) 95 pts! Offers stunning aromas of black cherry, blackberry and violet, with ripe, sweet fruit on the palate, shaded by iron, earth and tobacco elements. Supple yet well-structured, this should come together soon. Shows terrific harmony and length. Best from 2022 through 2036.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 94 pts! The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is a blend taken from Ama's four core estate vineyards. Black cherry, graphite, sage, mint, juniper berries and licorice give the San Lorenzo a distinctly dark, brooding profile to match its powerful feel. The big tannins need time to soften, but there is certainly plenty to look forward to. Stylistically, San Lorenzo is closest to Bellavista, with which it shares a decidedly somber feel. This is such a gorgeous wine. (Drink between 2020-2036)
