2016 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière

$109.99
2016 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière
We have a limited amount of this back vintage from this historic St. Emilion estate with strange beginnings. Initially, part of a leper colony in the 17th century, which is referenced in the name of the Chateau with a play on the word gaffet, which translates to leper. In 1971 the Chateau was picked up by count Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg and in 1985 passed it on to his son Stephan who remains the owner to this day. 2016 is a fantastic vintage that reached a heroic level in some instances, and the Canon-la-Gaffelière is an excellent example of that quality. 2016 was a warm and wet vintage that created an early bud break but with prolonged ripening, avoiding hail and drought in the summer with sufficient water reserves in the soil. Across the region, grapes ripened at different times, with picking in St. Emilion happening in late October. The wines of St. Emilion were some of the best, not just on the right bank but in the entire region. 2016 is one of the top examples from this Chateau of all time and is in a perfect place for enjoyment or cellared longer. We have just a few cases that are due to arrive next week, and it is an excellent buy for the vintage.

Antonio Galloni 96 points! "The 2016 Canon La Gaffelière is just as striking from bottle as it was from barrel. Bright, intensely aromatic and precise, the 2016 has it all. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, blood orange and rose petal all race through this silky, super-expressive Saint-Émilion. In 2016, Canon La Gaffelière is especially polished, refined and nuanced, which means also less overly powerful than in the past. It was compelling both times I tasted it from bottle. (Drink between 2024 - 2046)"

James Suckling 96 points! "The aromas are very complex with sweet tobacco, black truffles, blueberries and blackberries. Subtle. Menthol, too. Full-bodied yet so elegant. Structure with finesse and purity. The tannins are melted in the wine. Fabulous young wine. Try tasting it from 2023."

Jeb Dunnuck 95 points! "One of the most elegant and seamless wines in the vintage is the 2016 Canon-la-Gaffelière, a blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 60% new French oak. This medium to full-bodied beauty has brilliant minerality as well as tons of cassis fruits, notions of spice box, cedarwood, licorice, and dried earth, silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It shows the purity and elegance of the vintage to a T. Drink this fabulous Saint-Emilion any time over the coming 20+ years."
