2016 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Trois Sources (Pre-arrival)

ETA August 2020

A family estate since 1905, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, is unique in that the sourcing is from a single bloc divided up into Lieu dits planted on sandy soils made of red clay, limestone and granite gravels, and quartzite pebbles. Les Tois Sources comes from in between the vineyards Lieu Dits Calvin and Haut Lieux. The vines here are very established, averaging 80 years old. A blend of all twelve of the accepted varietals of aoc regulations for Chateneauf du Pape with grenache being the primary grape used. A bit of an under the radar producer and something different than the regular CDP favorites.

Jeb Dunnuck 98 points! The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Trois Sources is straight-up sensational and isn’t far off the more expensive Reserve cuvée in style and quality. Huge notes of blackcurrants, black raspberries, crushed violets, licorice, and incredible minerality, as well as a smoking floral quality, all soar from the glass of this full-bodied, seamless, pure wine that readers should snatch up. With good acidity, awesome purity, and a great, great finish, it's an incredible wine any way you look at it. Drink it anytime over the coming two decades or more.

Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 95 points! "Deep ruby. Pungent, mineral-accented cherry, black raspberry, licorice and garrigue scents, plus a hint of candied flowers in the background. Deep and alluringly sweet, offering cherry compote, lavender, star anise and cola flavors that are given frame and spine by a core of juicy acidity. Finishes extremely long, spicy and precise, with building tannins and a powerful whiplash of spice-laced red fruit liqueur."

Decanter (Matt Walls) 96 points! "Very deep, inky purple in colour, with a very powerful nose with fruit screeching out of the glass, almost Port-like. It's not heavy, still retaining real lightness of touch and fine tannins, but it is very concentrated, very long and almost painfully intense at this stage, showing flavours of violets, liquorice and a touch of tar. It will age well, but will be hard to keep your hands off of it. A lightning strike of a wine."
