2016 Elvio Cogno Barbera d'Alba Pre-Phylloxera$54.99
The Cogno wines have been spot on the last several vintages, classic expressions of Langhe that do not get nearly the hype as many of their neighbors. Created in 1990 after a long tenure at Marcarini (another of our favorites), it is a family estate now run by Elvio's son-in-law Valter Fissore. The 'Pre-Phelloxra' Barbera comes from one of the last ancient vineyards in Langhe with vines on their original root stalks reaching well over 100 years old unaffected by Phelloxra. A time capsule of a vineyard that has maintained classic Barbera expression. Located in Berri, this small plot is on sandy chalk soils which is a natural deterrence for Phelloxra. A concentrated, rich, and intense Barbera that is not afraid of the cellar. These old vines imbue a profound complexity even at a young age, and in a brilliant vintage like '16, it is incredible. One of the best, most unique Barberas around, and increasingly difficult to find.
