2016 Gustave Lorentz Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim

$25.99
2016 Gustave Lorentz Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim
One of the best buys for Gewurztraminer this vintage, this is a serious bottle that shows off the grape so well and is less of a "grapey" version with some beautiful complexity. There is much more of a restrained style here and it is simply an outstanding example made with 100% grand cru fruit. This typically goes for much more, but we were able to get more of this one at half the normal price! These are the last bottles we have to offer, so don't miss them!

We have a fantastic deal from Alsace today from the Lorentz family, who continue to produce incredible wines from their grand cru site of Aletnberg de Bergheim. The Lorentz family was first mentioned in the 17th century in the northeastern Alsatian commune of Ribeauvillé, eventually settling slightly north in Bergheim some 50 years later. Seven generations have passed, and Georges Lorentz now helms this old estate, producing Reisling, Guwerstaminer, and Pinot Gris in a fabulous, tightly knit, and dynamic fashion. Practicing organic viticulture on his 33 hectares of vines, Georges takes great lengths to respect the land and coax the most vineyard expression out of his wines. At the top of that list are Altenberg de Bergheim's grand cru vines, which are between 35 and 50 years old and planted on a mix of clay and limestone. This site has been recognized for producing exceptional wines since the 13th century and is noted for its powerful yet aromatically complex and energetic wines.
This is the first time we have offered the Gewurztraminer from this site, and 2016 is an excellent example that shows the more elegant and refined side of the grape without the more overtly expressive qualities it can sometimes have. 2016 is an outstanding vintage for Gustave Lorentz, and this is one of the best iterations they have released, showing magnificently with a bit of age on it. This is very complex, and while this does have a touch of sweetness, it's more like the proper dosage of Champagne than a huge residual sugar bomb. This is a rare wine, and the only bottles currently available in the USA are on auction for $40+, making this a fantastic buy and an easy transition for Riesling fans. One of the best Gewurztraminers of the vintage, this is a serious one to check out, especially at this low pricing.

Decanter World Wide Awards 94 points, Silver Medal (Blind Tasting Panel) "Generous roasted pineapple and candied fruits with a touch of white truffle; sweet and pure with a long, mature finish."

James Suckling 93 points! "Here’s gewurz for those who normally find the wines of this grape too bombastic. Time has mellowed this creamy yet rather elegant gewurz and made it friendly and gentle. Enough depth and textural complexity for the Grand Cru category and a long, rather delicate finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
