We were able to get a bit more of these two excellent late releases from Marc Colin today after selling out. Marc Colin created this estate in the 70s with his wife through holdings inherited by his family, the now-famous Colin's. Many of the vineyards he was granted had been in the family's possession for over a century, and like all of the Collins, they specialize in White Burgundy as natives of Chassagne Montrachet. Though the vineyards have been split up among many family members, they continue to do the Colin name justice. Today, Marc's children, Damien and Caroline, run the estate, which currently covers 12 hectares over 26 appellations. The brother-and-sister duo practices Lutte Raisonee and is experimenting with organic practices in some vineyards. Both these wines are in great condition and are showing very well now after nearly 10 years of age. These are rare finds and great buys for the vintage, and these are the same price as the new releases but much more ready to drink. We only have a case of each available, so act quickly!
Vinous (Neil Martin) 94 points! "The 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Cailleret from Domaine Marc Colin is burnished gold in color. It has an intense bouquet, a little richer than I expect, with ample Golden Delicious, brioche, chamomile and yellow flower scents, though perhaps not quite delivering the mineralité that I expect from this limestone-dominated vineyard. That is true of the palate too, although it has fantastic weight and girth, delivering layers of citrus fruit, custard creams and shaved almond – dare I say, almost like a very fine Chardonnay from Sonoma! Gorgeous, but not as cerebral as some of Damien Colin’s other 2016s. (Drink between 2020-2028)"
Decanter (William Kelley) 94 points! "The Caillerets is superb in 2016, opening in the glass with a classic and reserved bouquet of crème pâtissière, citrus zest and chalky soil tones. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, very concentrated and searingly mineral, with enormous length and cut for the vintage. Colin’s pure style means that the vineyard is front and centre here."
