2016 Nikolaihof Riesling Steiner Hund Trocken

$49.99
2016 Nikolaihof Riesling Steiner Hund Trocken
Nikolaihof is the fountainhead for the most incredible white wines in Austria. Rich with an almost 2,000-year-old history, Nikolaihof was purchased by the Saahs family in 1894, remaining the present-day owners. The key here is an extreme attention to detail in the vineyards, strictly upholding biodynamic practices led by winemaker Nikolaus Saahs. In the cellar, which is an ancient Roman crypt, the wines ferment with natural yeasts and are left to age in 2,000 liters to 12,000-liter barrels.
The Steiner Hund wines are always the contenders for the most mineral-driven of the estate, and that's no exception this vintage. 2016 is an exceptional vintage for the Steiner Hund, and this dry Reisling saw one of its best renditions of all time. The vines here are forced to go deep into the bedrock in search of nutrients, and the reason Steiner Hund has so much mineral intensity. The 2016 is textbook Nikolaihof, after spending 2.5 years in wood, is a gorgeous example of their terroir-driven style and shows many of the different aspects that make a great Riesling, power, intensity, purity, complexity, depth, and finesse. It is a great example from Nikolaihof and a genuinely magnificent terroir-driven bottle of Riesling. We have a nice number here today on a few cases, and this is a serious bottle worth checking for Riesling fans and at pricing a bit lower than some of the top dry German examples.

Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt) 96 points! "With cacao and crushed stone as well as concentrated peach aromas, the 2016 Ried Steiner Hund Riesling is subtle, refined and complex on the finely spicy yet deep, complex and elegant nose. Bottled in April this year, this is a full-bodied, dense, juicy, well-concentrated and crystalline-mineral Riesling with lots of power and sustainable grip and concentration. Another long-distance runner yet more puristic and grippy than the 2015 or 2013. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021."
