One of the more limited selections from Philipponnat, The 2016 Blanc de Noirs is 100% Pinot Noir sourced from the grand and premier cru villages of Mareuil-sur-Ay, and Verzy is only made in exceptional years. This Champagne is very vineyard driven, powerful, yet polished and refined, showing the absolute beauty of this house's Pinot Noir, which they have been cultivating since 1522. This cuvee is a careful selection of some of the best Pinot Noir of the vintage collected from the first pressing, which is the best part of the press. The juice is vinified in vats where it sees partial malo and in wood barrels where it sees a blocked malo creating a beautiful dynamic of energy and richness while protecting against premature oxidation and retaining purity. This was aged on the lees for 7 years to develop maximum complexity and to highlight the secondary and tertiary aromas, which are the hallmark of extended aging on lees. This is one of the top vintages of this cuvee of all time, and we have lo pricing here today, making it an excellent buy for vintage Champagne from this great Champagne house.
Antonio Galloni 93 points! "The 2016 Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs is a powerful, resonant Champagne full of Pinot character. Red cherry fruit, spice, leather, incense and dried flowers convey tons of Pinot nuance, while pretty floral top notes lend brightness. The 2016 is perhaps a bit lithe at the outset, but it opens beautifully with time, offering terrific energy and verve. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: March, 2022."
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 93 points! "Disgorged in April 2022, the 2016 Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs is a very classy wine, delivering aromas of red apples, pear, honeycomb and nectarine, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered palate that's broad, textural and vinous. A serious, gastronomic Champagne, it will work well at table."
