One of the three classic cuvees that Pol Roger makes every year, the Brut vintage is one of the best examples of this vintage, and we were able to get a few cases of this new release at this great price. Pol Roger's Champagnes have an elegance and refinement that have attracted many, yet they never lack in power or precision for how much finesse they have. Pol Roger is a great Champagne house, and considering the quality you get for the price, especially for their vintage Champagnes, they are one of the top stops for Champagne.
This is the current release for Pol Roger, which has been aging in its 33-meter-deep cellars for seven years, entirely riddled by hand and recently disgorged. The brut sees the traditional house blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from 20 different Grand and Premier Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and Cote de Blancs. Each village is vinified separately and blended at the end to make the best final product. Floral, spiced, with dried fruits and pastries, this has an excellent mousse and is fresh, focused, complex, and supple on the finish with dry extract and minerals. It is a great vintage from a great producer, and while it was a challenging growing season for Champagne, with yields down, it has gained some lovely concentration, showing the best of the year. The Vintage Brut is an incredibly consistent bottle, and 2016 is an excellent example among the best of all time from Pol Roger.
Wine Advocate (Yohan Castaing) 94 pts! "The 2016 Brut Vintage reveals a complex, gourmand bouquet with aromas of ripe orchard fruits, nectarine, pastry, nuts, sweet spices and ripe white fruits, signs of a warm vintage. Full-bodied, broad and vinous with a fleshy core of fruit, it’s rich and elegant with a penetrating, saline finish. It will drink at its peak in five to 10 years."
