2017 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast$34.99
Its been a year or more since we offered the wines from Anthill farms. We have been long time fans of this producer that exemplifies the classic side of California Pinot Noir. This Sonoma Coast bottling is a beauty sourced from two vineyards sites. One west of Sebastopol on the edge of the Petaluma Gap, the other from the Northern part of the Sonoma Coast AVA just a few miles inland from the Ocean. These cool climate vineyards do not ripen till October so the long hang time allows the grapes to reach total physiological maturity. The vineyards are worked sustainably at a minimum. Depending on the wine and the vintage they do add some whole cluster grapes into the fermentation thanks. The wines are aged in French oak barrels with a small percentage being new. The wines will spend a long time on the healthy lees before being bottled un-fined and un- filtered. This is a gorgeous example of the Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir with a mélange of blue and red fruits, violets, spice, and a touch of underbrush. The palate is elegant and balanced with lingering red fruit flavors, minerals, spice and a little structure. Drinkable now this should provide amazing drinking over the next 5+ years.
Antonio Galloni 92 pts! The 2017 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a gorgeous wine that captures all the best of the Anthill Farms style. Pliant and generous, with tons of bright and saline energy, the 2017 is a wonderfully complete wine. Freshly cut flowers, chalk, mint and white pepper give the 2017 its striking freshness and nuance. This is such a pretty wine in its peer group. In a word: superb. (Drink between 2020-2027)
