Though it has been a while, we are back with another fantastic wine from Elio Grasso, the Casa Mate, a favorite among Barolo fans and exceptionally good this vintage. The 2017 Casa Mate From Elio Grasso is one of the best examples ever produced and is on par with the excellent 2010 and 2016 examples, which is very uncommon for this vintage.
Elio Grasso is located in Monforte d'Alba, working 18 hectares of vineyards within a world heritage site. True farmers at heart with a love for tradition, but in looking for something new to offer, Elio Grasso decided in 1978 to bottle their vineyards separately to show off their unique vineyard sites instead of one singular bottling for Barolo. Thus Casa Mate was Born. Casa Mate is a south-facing vineyard located at about 1,000 feet elevation featuring moderately loose-packed and slightly clayey limestone soils. The vines are over 40 years old, and harvested fruit is traditionally fermented in 25-hectoliter Slovenian oak casks. Casa Mate represents the most elegant and ethereal Barolo from Elio Grasso, especially so this vintage with incredible complexity while retaining its classicism. This is a top buy for Elio Grasso and one of the wines of the vintage for 2017 Barolo at pricing we haven't seen for this wine in almost a decade. We have fantastic pricing here today on this brilliant effort, and it's one of the not to miss Barolos of the vintage.
Jed Dunnuck 97 pts! "The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate has a slightly darker profile of licorice, black cherry, and wood spice. The palate is generous and structured, with plum pit, mineral-rich earth, and dried orange blossom. These are wines with incredible aromatic complexity and depth. Drink 2025-2050.<!--more-->This estate covers 42 hectares of land, of which 18 are dedicated to vineyard and the remainder to forest. Today, the entire family is involved at the winery – Elio, Gianluca, Marina, Francesca, Martina and Anna Grasso. In the cellar, Gianluca practices low temperature fermentations with long macerations of up to two months with submerged cap management. Large Slavonian casks of 15- to 22-year-old barrels that have been steam-treated instead of charred are utilized. In 2017, they managed the vineyard differently to adapt to the challenges of the vintage and did two separate green harvests in order to ensure the grapes achieved phenolic ripeness; once during veraison, as well as in August, reducing yields by nearly another 50%. Antonio Galloni 96 pts! "The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is a dark, mysterious wine. Black cherry, menthol, tobacco, licorice, spice, new leather and pine meld together in a super-classic expression of Ginestra. Deep, rich and enveloping, the 2017 is so impressive in the early going. Here, too, the finesse of the tannins is remarkable. (Drink between 2025 - 2042)"
